  1. The adder is a European venomous SNAKE,
  2. similar to the common VIPER. It can grow to
  3. about 60cm (24in) in length, it has a thick
  4. body, triangular head, a characteristic 
  5. V-shaped mark on its head and, often, zigzag
  6. markings along the back. It feeds on small 
  7. mammals and lizards. The puff adder is a 
  8. large, yellowish, thick-bodied viper up to 
  9. 1.6m (5ft) long, living in Africa and Arabia.
  10. The adder, a shy animal and is the only 
  11. poisonous snake found in Britain. The name 
  12. adder is often used for any snake that
  13. happens to look like an adder. Two such 
  14. species live in Australia, and are known as
  15. the common death adder and the desert death 
  16. adder, these two snakes and are not members
  17. of the viper family.
